The pop icon declares that he would love to be a part of Bollywood film
Pop rock band Jal's front man Goher Mumtaz came back with a bang in the Pakistani music scene after a hiatus of two years with a brand new single titled 'Tere Bajoun'.
However, besides the recently released song it was another one of his statement that made the singer-turned actor prominent across the border. In April, Mumtaz had asserted that unlike other Pakistani musicians, he has never been dependent on Bollywood.
Hence, Times of India (TOI) decided to interview the Pakistani sensation where he spoke at length about not only his career in music but also about a very hushed topic- his former band member Atif Aslam.
The excerpts of the interview are as follows:
Tell us about 'Tere baajo' in detail.
I was recording OST (Original Sound Track) for my upcoming drama serial in studios . It was Saad (Sultan) who was playing the guitar and I just started singing these two lines which came out naturally, 'Tere baajo ho gaya bura haal, dil mangda hi bas thoda pyaar'. I recorded these lines on my phone later and wrote the whole song. Lyrics and compositions come out naturally according to your mood and I enjoy this whole process. Shooting for the video of the song was a great experience. Azaan Sami Khan has succeeded in giving Jal a new look. It took us six months to figure out the appropriate director who can understand the style of band. Roads in Karachi are usually closed due to political strikes but for the first time, it was because of the shoot of a music video. Also, it was one of the most memorable moments of my life to actually work with my wife Anam Ahmad in a video. While we were working on the song, she entered the studios and said, 'Goher, this song is sounding really nice'. I told her that we are planning a comeback video for Jal and asked her to be a part of it.

The first album Aadat had no Punjabi song. The second album Boondh had a Punjabi song 'Main mast hoon' and then the third album Pyaas had 'Udd jaana'. 'Tere baajo' is another addition to the list. Tell us about your inclination towards Punjabi.
It all comes out naturally and is not planned. When I was composing songs like 'Aadat', 'Woh lamhe', 'Dil Harri' and 'Sajni', I naturally started writing in Urdu and Hindi. 'Main mast hoon' is a combination of Urdu and Punjabi. I choose the language on the basis of melody of the song. If Punjabi suits a particular song, I write it in Punjabi. Punjabi is also widely spoken in Pakistan and India's Punjab.
Talk about the new line-up of Jal.
I have come up with a forever unbreakable solution for Jal. We have now Saad Sultan on the guitar and he has been playing with us for the last eight years now. He is one of the finest music producers in Pakistan. On bass, we have Amir Azhar, a top-notch bass guitarist, who has also been a member of Mekaal Hasan Band. Now, both of them play with Jal on live concerts. Simultaneously, they are also free to work on their solo projects. So basically, nobody is joining or leaving the band.
You had said that unlike other Pakistani musicians, you have never been dependent on Bollywood. What made you say so?
I am a great fan of Indian music and really like AR Rahman. I meant to say that many songs by Jal which were never part of Bollywood have also become hits among the listeners. Songs like 'Sajni', 'Tanhai', 'Panchi' and 'Tere baajo' did not feature in any Bollywood film but crowds scream for these songs during our live concerts. So, in that way, we have never been dependent on Bollywood. However, it is great to be a part of any Bollywood film. I like Bollywood songs and play them in my car.
'Aadat' and 'Woh lamhe' were your compositions which became the entry door for Atif in Bollywood. Do you feel cheated?
I did feel cheated as it had to be Jal singing those songs but unfortunately, Mahesh Bhatt saab did not know that those songs were originally written and composed by me. But then again, both I and Atif were part of those songs when they were recorded. When Bhatt saab came to know that I wrote and composed those songs, he invited me to his office and told me that he didn't know about the exact situation. Later on, Jal's version of 'Aadat' and 'Woh lamhe' were included in the albums, which was pretty much justified. I have a lot of respect for Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt as they gave break to Atif and Jal in India. I think it's time to forget the past and move forward.
Are you and Atif in touch?
Yes, for the last seven years. Fans still think that we don't talk but let me tell you, we now meet and talk on the phone in the same way we used to when we were together in the same university. We cherish all those moments and discuss our struggling days.
Jal has survived despite the journey being filled with ups and downs. But don't you think that change in the line-up and delay in the album and song releases has adversely affected the band?
Even after changes, Jal is the only Pakistani band which has survived. Plus, we also managed to release our third album Pyaas and have four videos in hand. The problem is not the delay but showcasing your work on television these days. TV channels don't play pop music these days because of lot of Bollywood songs being played there. Ways of promoting non-filmy music have changed and it has become difficult for bands to showcase their work properly. Despite all this, Jal has been really active in terms of releasing new songs and videos.
Tell us about your future projects.
We are releasing a new song and a video on Eid and will soon be performing at Hard Rock Cafe, Pune.
